On July 4, BYD, the Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) manufacturer, marked a significant achievement with the inauguration of its factory in Rayong, Thailand, and the production of its 8 millionth NEV.

The new Thai facility, which was constructed in just 16 months, boasts an annual production capacity of around 150,000 vehicles. The plant includes four main production workshops and a components factory. This milestone makes BYD the first automaker globally to reach the 8 million NEV production mark, with the Dolphin model being the notable vehicle produced at the new plant.

At the inauguration event, BYD Chairman and President Wang Chuanfu expressed appreciation to the governments of China and Thailand, as well as Thai customers and partners, for their support. He highlighted BYD's dominant position in the Thai market, where the brand has led all-electric vehicle sales for 18 consecutive months. Currently, one in every three electric vehicles sold in Thailand is a BYD, indicating strong market acceptance. BYD plans to expand its offerings in Thailand with more battery-electric and plug-in hybrid models, utilizing the country's manufacturing capabilities and BYD's advanced technology to boost the local automotive sector.

BYD has been rapidly growing its international presence, with passenger car exports reaching 243,000 units in 2023, a 337% year-on-year increase. In the first half of this year, BYD sold 1.607 million passenger cars, a 28.8% increase from the previous year, with over 203,000 units sold overseas, marking a 173.8% rise.

BYD's NEVs are now available in 88 countries and regions, spanning over 400 cities globally. Beyond Thailand, BYD has established production bases in Brazil, Hungary, Uzbekistan, and other countries.
